Step-by-Step: Embedding Voice Capture in Alchemer

Step 1 — Create a Voice Capture Project

Log in to your Voice Capture dashboard and click New Project. Give your project a name that matches your survey (e.g., "Q1 Brand Tracker — Voice"). Choose your primary language — Voice Capture supports transcription in 36 languages via Whisper.

On the project settings screen, you can customize:

• Max recording duration — we recommend 90 seconds for most open-ends
• UI language — the microphone widget will display in the respondent's language
• Prompt text — what the widget says to encourage recording (e.g., "Click to record your answer")

Click Save to generate your embed snippet.

Step 2 — Copy Your Embed Snippet

On the project page, click the Get Embed Code button. You'll see a small JavaScript snippet that looks like this:

Step 3 — Open Your Alchemer Survey Editor

Navigate to the survey where you want to add voice responses. In the Alchemer Survey Builder, locate the open-ended question where you want to add the voice option.

Voice Capture works best alongside — not instead of — a text box. Respondents who prefer to type can still type. Those who prefer to speak can speak. This hybrid approach typically increases completion rates because it removes friction for both groups.

Step 4 — Add an HTML Question Element

In Alchemer's question library, add a new question of type Text/Media Element (or "Custom HTML" depending on your Alchemer version). Place it immediately after your open-ended text question.

Paste the Voice Capture embed snippet into the HTML content area of this element. Make sure the element is set to display on the same page as the open-end it accompanies.

Step 5 — Preview and Test

Click Preview Survey in Alchemer. You should see the Voice Capture microphone widget appear below your open-ended question. Click it to test a recording. Speak a sample answer for 10–15 seconds, then click Stop.

Return to your Voice Capture dashboard — within 30 seconds you should see the test recording appear, already transcribed. If it doesn't appear, double-check that your Project ID in the snippet matches the one in your dashboard.

Step 6 — Configure Response Notifications (Optional)

In Voice Capture project settings, you can enable email notifications for new responses. This is useful for fieldwork monitoring — you'll know immediately if your audio capture is working as respondents complete the survey.

Step 7 — Launch and Monitor

Publish your Alchemer survey as normal. Voice Capture runs entirely client-side — there's nothing to configure on Alchemer's servers. The widget will automatically capture, upload, and transcribe every voice response your respondents record.

Monitor incoming responses from your Voice Capture dashboard. You can read every auto-transcription as it arrives, edit it if needed, and export everything to CSV with a single click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do respondents need to install anything?

No. Voice Capture runs entirely in the browser using the Web Audio API. Respondents simply click the microphone button and allow microphone access when prompted — the same permission request they'd see on any website that uses their microphone. No apps, no plugins, no downloads.

What happens if a respondent's browser doesn't support microphone access?

The widget gracefully degrades — it hides itself if the browser doesn't support voice input. The underlying text open-end remains fully functional so no data is lost.

Is the voice data secure?

All audio is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and transcribed in real time — we never store audio files. Voice Capture does not share data with third parties. Pro Tips for Better Voice Data

• Write a spoken prompt — instead of "Please describe your experience," try "In your own words, tell us about your experience as if you were talking to a friend." Conversational language produces conversational answers.
• Keep recordings under 2 minutes — longer recordings lead to rambling. Set a 90-second limit and you'll get focused, quotable answers.
