New: video answers

Let respondents answer on video, inside the survey you already run

On an open-ended question, the respondent records a short video answer right in the survey: no app to install, no file to upload. The transcript lands in the survey's own answer field, and the video waits for you in the Voice Capture dashboard.

Same snippet as voice answers · QuestionPro, Alchemer, Toluna Start and any platform that runs custom JavaScript

    How a video answer works

    1. Turn video on for the question

Use the same snippet as for voice answers. In the project settings, choose video and how the question is shown; the code in your survey does not change.

    2. Consent comes first

Before the camera turns on, the respondent reads a notice that says what is stored, for how long and that it is kept confidential, and ticks a checkbox to agree.

    3. Record, review, send

The respondent records in the browser, watches the take and can record again before sending it. Tested on iPhone and desktop.

    4. The transcript lands in your data

As with a voice answer, the transcript is written into the question's own answer field, so your survey platform stores it with the rest of the response. The video is in your dashboard, and every answer gets an automatic sentiment label.

    Face privacy, decided before recording

Each project decides how much of the respondent the video shows. Privacy is applied in the respondent's browser before anything is recorded: the original, unblurred video never leaves their device.

    When it applies

    • Off

The video is recorded as the camera captures it.

    • Respondent's choice

The respondent sees a “Hide my face” checkbox and decides whether to tick it.

    • Always on

Every video is recorded with privacy applied. If the browser cannot apply it, the respondent answers by voice or in writing instead.

    What gets hidden

    • Face only

Every face the detector finds is pixelated, and the whole frame is blurred when it finds none. It is best effort: a face far away or in profile may be missed.

    • Whole video blurred

A soft, frosted-glass blur over the whole frame: you can tell it is a real person, their posture and gestures, but nobody can be recognized. Use this one when you need strict anonymity.

Try it with your own camera

The public demo runs the same privacy options as the widget, on your own camera. Nothing is uploaded.

    Open the demo

You can also embed the demo in your own survey or page with an iframe:

    <iframe src="https://api.voicecapture.ai/demo/face-privacy" allow="camera; microphone" width="100%" height="720"></iframe>

Typing, voice or video: the respondent chooses

One question, one snippet. You decide how it is shown:

Voice or text, with a video option

The usual answer box, for typing or speaking, with an “I prefer to answer on video” button. Each answer is charged by the method used.

    Video only

The question opens directly in video mode.

What you control in each project

    • Where the controls sit: beside, below or above the video (on a phone they always stack).
    • The colors, taken from the project's widget theme.
    • The maximum length: up to 60 seconds on the free trial, 120 seconds on paid packs, and longer on custom plans.
    • The retention: how many days videos are kept, up to 365 on paid packs (30 on the free trial).
    • The consent text: the default notice is always shown, and you can add your own text below it.
    • Face privacy: off, the respondent's choice, or always on.

    Privacy and data

    • The transcript is written into your survey, like any typed answer, and your platform stores it.
    • The video is stored privately in the EU (Frankfurt). You watch or download it in the dashboard through links that expire.
    • Each video is deleted automatically when the project's retention period ends: up to 365 days on paid packs, 30 days on the free trial.
    • No video without consent: the respondent reads the notice and ticks the checkbox before the camera turns on.
    • Erasure requests from respondents are supported.
    • Voice Capture does not perform facial recognition or biometric identification. Face privacy only locates faces in order to hide them.

    How Voice Capture handles data

Works where your survey already runs

Video answers use the same snippet as voice answers, so they work on QuestionPro, Alchemer, Toluna Start and any platform that runs custom JavaScript. Tested on iPhone and desktop.

Available for surveys in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

    What a video answer costs

Typed answers are free. A voice answer costs 1 credit. A video answer costs 25 credits.

    Questions about video answers

Does the respondent need an app or to upload a file?

No. The respondent records right on the survey page, in the browser, and sends the answer from there. There is nothing to install and no file to upload.

What does the respondent see before the camera turns on?

A consent notice that says what is stored, for how long and that it is kept confidential, and a checkbox to agree. The camera turns on only after they tick it. You can add your own text below the default notice.

Where are the videos stored, and for how long?

In private storage in the EU (Frankfurt). You watch and download them in the Voice Capture dashboard through links that expire. Each video is deleted automatically when the project's retention period ends: up to 365 days on paid packs and 30 days on the free trial.

    Can respondents hide their face?

Yes, if the project turns face privacy on, either always or as the respondent’s choice with a “Hide my face” checkbox. “Face only” pixelates every face the detector finds and is best effort: a face far away or in profile may be missed. For strict anonymity, use “Whole video blurred”. Either way it is applied in the browser before recording, so the original never leaves the respondent’s device.

Can respondents still type or answer by voice?

Yes. Show the usual voice and text box with an “I prefer to answer on video” button, and each respondent picks. Or make the question video only.

Which platforms and languages are supported?

QuestionPro, Alchemer, Toluna Start and any platform that runs custom JavaScript, with the same snippet as voice answers. Video answers are available for surveys in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

How much does a video answer cost?

25 credits. A voice answer costs 1 credit and typed answers are free. Credits come in one-time packs and never expire.
