Best Voice Survey Tools in 2026 (Compared by What They Actually Are)

    By ·Published September 21, 2026·10 min read

Most comparisons in this category rank tools that are not substitutes for each other. Before choosing a vendor, decide which of the three products you actually need — the answer usually rules out two thirds of the list.

Three different products share one name

Search for voice survey software and you will get a ranked list of ten vendors. The problem with that list is that the tools on it are not alternatives to each other. Ask three of them to do the same job and two will be the wrong shape entirely — not worse, just built for something else.

There are three distinct products being sold under the same phrase:

ProductWhat the respondent doesWhat it costs you to adopt
AI-moderated interviewHolds a conversation with an AI that decides what to ask nextA new platform, and a study designed as an interview
Voice-first survey platformAnswers a normal survey, speaking instead of typingRebuilding your questionnaire on their platform
Widget in your existing surveyAnswers a normal survey, speaking instead of typingOne block of code in the study you already field

The second and third look identical to the respondent and completely different to you. That distinction is the whole decision, and most comparison posts skip it.

    1. AI-moderated interview platforms

Here the AI runs the conversation. You brief it with objectives, it asks the questions, and it decides what to follow up on based on what each person says. Koji, Listen Labs, Strella, Outset, Conveo, Glaut, Perspective AI and TheySaid all sit in this category — that list comes from Koji’s own comparison of the space. Tellet describes itself as an AI-moderated research interview platform running interviews in 57 languages, and Ouvia replaces the form with interactive agents that ask their own follow-ups, delivered by link or QR code.

Choose this when you want qualitative depth at a scale you could not staff with human moderators, and you are willing to design the study as an interview rather than a questionnaire.

Do not choose it when you have a 12-minute tracker with three open ends in it. You would be replacing a questionnaire you already trust with a conversation you cannot compare wave over wave.

If this is the category you need, Voice Capture is not your tool, and we would rather say so here than after you have signed up. We do not moderate interviews.

    2. Voice-first survey platforms

A normal survey, built on their platform, where some questions accept a spoken answer.

    • Voiceform — the most established of these, positioned around AI-moderated interviews and voice surveys together.
    • Typeform Research Flow — supports text, audio and video answers, and keeps the original recording alongside a transcript. Worth reading their own write-up on it: they recommend offering voice as an option rather than a requirement, which matches what we see.
    • Nuvopoll — respondents record straight from the browser; it transcribes automatically and shows the transcript side by side with the raw recording.
    • Voxpopme — video-first, strongest when you want to watch faces rather than read transcripts.

Choose this when you are starting a study from scratch, or when your current survey platform is not one you are attached to. You get one vendor, one dashboard, one bill.

The cost is the migration. Your logic, your quotas, your panel integration and your export format all have to be rebuilt and re-tested on their platform. For a one-off study that is fine. For a tracker in its fourth wave it usually is not.

    3. A widget inside the survey you already run

The third shape leaves your study exactly where it is and adds a microphone to the questions you choose. Phonic was the best-known product here until it shut down in June 2025, which is why so many researchers went looking for a replacement and found only platforms.

Voice Capture is a block of code you paste into a survey you already field — Alchemer, QuestionPro, FormAssembly, or any platform that lets you add your own HTML and JavaScript. The respondent speaks, the answer is transcribed automatically in 36 languages and written back into the field, so it arrives in your normal export next to every other answer. Typing stays available throughout.

Choose this when the questionnaire already exists and you do not want to touch it, when the study has to stay comparable to previous waves, or when your panel and quotas live in a platform you are not moving.

Do not choose it when you want the AI to conduct the interview, or when you want a single vendor to own the whole study end to end. And it genuinely cannot run inside SurveyMonkey or Typeform, which strip custom JavaScript from the respondent’s view — if that is your platform, look at category 2.

How to choose, in three questions

    1. Does the AI need to decide what to ask next? Yes → category 1. No → keep going.
    2. Does the questionnaire already exist somewhere you intend to keep? Yes → category 3. No → category 2.
    3. Can your platform run your own JavaScript on the respondent page? If not, category 3 is closed to you regardless of preference.

A warning about the numbers in this category

Every vendor here, us included, will tell you that spoken answers are richer than typed ones. The multipliers quoted range from three times to six times, and in most cases you will not find a sample size, a date or a method attached to any of them. We checked the comparisons ranking for these terms: the headline figures are presented as fact with nothing to check them against.

We are not in a position to be smug about this. Our own headline figure comes from pilot testing that predates the product, and because that pilot came out of a client engagement, we cannot publish its sample size or its dates. So we did the next best thing: we measured again, properly, on real client fieldwork — 7,169 responses across seven studies — and the number came out lower than the pilot. Both are published side by side, with the arithmetic, on our methodology page, including the parts neither measurement can tell you.

When you are comparing vendors, the useful question is not whose multiplier is biggest. It is which of them will show you how they got it.

    Frequently asked questions

Which is the closest replacement for Phonic?

By shape, a widget — Phonic added voice to research without asking you to move the study. Most of the tools now marketed as replacements are platforms, which is a different trade.

Can I use a voice widget and an AI interview platform together?

Yes, and it is a reasonable setup: the tracker keeps running where it is with voice on its open ends, and the interview platform handles the exploratory work alongside it. They answer different questions.

Does adding voice mean respondents stop typing?

No, and it should not. Typeform reaches the same conclusion in their own material: voice works best offered as a choice rather than required. Every implementation we ship keeps the text field working.

    What happens to the audio?

That varies by vendor and it is worth asking before you buy. Some keep the recording so you can listen back; others keep only the text. In Voice Capture the audio is processed in memory and never stored — only the transcription is kept, in EU-hosted infrastructure.

    Where to start

If you landed here because a study is already in field and you want richer open ends without rebuilding it, that is category 3, and you can test it on one question this afternoon. The integrations page has the setup for each platform, and the free tier includes 250 credits without a card.

If you are starting fresh, or you want the AI to run the conversation, one of the other two categories will serve you better — and the sections above should tell you which.
